Mountain light

Mountain Light, by Laurence Yep, is a 281 paged novel telling about a young man trying to stop being a clown and get more serious. The main characters are: Squeaky, Cassia, Dusty Tiny, Lumpy, and Ducky. One day a villager named Squeaky thinks he is found by the Manchus, but it turns out it was 3 rebels, who eventually let him join. They took a boat for safety from the incoming Manchus, yet Cassia's father is shot by a character named Dusty. As the rest of the group finished off their journey, Cassia gets too worried about Squeak's constant joking and unawareness and tells him to meet her at her village every few time. After many events such as Ducky's death, Cassia is caught trying to help Tiny, who is a stranger, and held captive for a death punishment. Yet Squeaky saves her, sacrificing his chances to go back home. Squeaky then left towards America meeting Cassia's brother, Foxfire, and finally living in peace. The theme here is importance of friendship.

The theme in the novel is importance of friendship. First, without Cassia, Tiny, or Cassia's dad, Squeaky wouldn't have escaped the Manchus. Second, Cassia and Tiny were the only ones, besides Ducky, who Squeaky could have talked about the situation without getting in a serious problem. Thirdly, Cassia taught Squeaky how to stop clowning around and get serious. Finally, they greatly supported him through every problem. Importance of friendship was the main theme in Mountain Light.
