Dragon Wings, by Laurence Yep, is a 245 paged novel telling the steps of Moon Shadow and Wind Rider creating a machine that can fly. The main characters are: Wind Rider, Moon Shadow, Uncle Bright Star, Black Dog, Miss Whitlaw, Robin, Lefty, White Deer, and Hand Clap. Moon Shadow comes to San Francisco to live with his father, Wind Rider. While living with the company Wind Rider explains he thinks he was a dragon in another life. Black Dog attacked Moon Shadow, which caused Wind Rider to fight him. Sadly, that also led Moon Shadow and Wind Rider having to move. They then met Miss Whitlaw and Robin, making a friendship for a while. Then, the great San Francisco Earthquake occurs, causing few people to help find the survivors. Sadly, every T,ang man was to leave giving Moon Shadow another new home. Wind Rider starts working on a project to fly, and before it’s done, their money is stolen by Black Dog. Everyone comes to help, yet the machine immediately crashed in the air. They accept what happened and feel very lucky. The most important setting is San Francisco.

The most important setting in Dragon Wings is San Francisco. First, it was where almost all the characters lived. Second, this was the area that had the great San Francisco earthquake occurred. Thirdly, this is where Wind Rider learned that the Wright brothers created the first flying machine. Lastly, there was a lot of discrimination over there. San Francisco is the most important setting in the novel.
